Does Ozempic Cause Hair Loss? Let’s Talk About It
Ozempic and similar medications have become incredibly popular for weight loss, but with that comes questions about side effects – including hair loss. You’re not alone if you’ve noticed more shedding or thinning after starting a weight loss journey. Let’s look at what might be happening and how you can look after your hair better in the future.
Is It Ozempic?
As far as we know, it’s not the Ozempic itself causing hair loss, instead, it’s what happens to your body when you rapidly lose weight. When this happens it is often linked to something called telogen effluvium, a temporary condition where hair stops growing and sheds in response to physical stress.
When your body undergoes a big change, like a significant drop in calories or weight, it can start prioritising essential functions (like keeping your heart, lungs and brain healthy) over less critical ones, like hair growth. If your body isn’t getting enough nutrients, or it’s feeling stressed, hair growth takes a backseat.
I’ve personally seen this happening to some of my clients who are using Ozempic, and it’s something I’ve also noticed in the past with other forms of rapid weight loss too. It’s not unique to Ozempic – whenever weight loss is too quick or the body is under stress, hair can be one of the first things to suffer.
So what’s Really Happening?
Hair loss during rapid weight loss usually comes down to a few things:
Not Enough Nutrients: If your body doesn’t get what it needs (protein, iron, biotin, zinc, etc.), your hair won’t have the building blocks to grow properly.
Stress on the Body: Sudden weight loss is a stressor, and stress can push your hair into a “resting” phase, causing it to shed a few months later.
Hormonal Changes: Weight loss can affect your hormones, which may also contribute to thinning hair in some cases.
How to Support Your Hair
The good news is that telogen effluvium is temporary, and your hair should grow back as your body adjusts and recovers – but it’s important to address the root causes (pun intended) to support healthy regrowth.
Here’s what you can do:
Focus on Nutrition
Hair needs nutrients like protein, iron, biotin, and omega-3s. If you’re not getting enough from your diet, supplements like Glowwa Hair Food can be a game-changer. Glowwa works from the inside out, giving your body what it needs to grow stronger, healthier hair.
Take It Slow
Rapid weight loss might feel exciting, but it can be hard on your body. A slower, more sustainable approach is better for your health – and your hair.
Care for Your Scalp
A healthy scalp is key to healthy hair. Regular scalp massages, gentle cleansing, and nourishing treatments can help create the best environment for regrowth.
Address Stress
Stress makes everything worse, including hair loss. Whether it’s yoga, mindfulness, or just finding time to relax, reducing stress can help your body (and hair) recover faster.
Why Glowwa Can Help
If you’re looking for a way to support hair recovery, Glowwa Hair Food is brilliant and both my clients and myself have seen great results. It’s designed to give your body the necessary nutrients to repair and regrow hair. While it’s not a quick fix (nothing worthwhile is!), it’s an amazing tool for rebuilding healthy hair from the inside out.
my Final Thoughts
Hair loss can feel upsetting, but more often than not it’s temporary and reversible with the right care. If you’re on a weight loss journey and notice changes in your hair, it’s worth pausing and revisiting the path you have chosen to ensure your body is getting what it needs.
As a hairdresser, I’ve seen how rapid weight loss, whether through Ozempic or other methods can affect hair. The key is to support your body through the process and give it the tools it needs to recover.
